All He Wanted Was To Be A "ROAR!"

The conversation went like this:

Me: "Honey, what do you want to be for Halloween?"
The Little: "Mama! Mama! Mama! Wanna be Roar!"

A Roar? Huh.

Me: "Is that a lion?"
The Little: "No mama! No lion. Wanna be Roar!"

OK. Lets try again.

Me: "Is a Roar a bear?"
The Little: "No. Mama. A. ROAR! Wanna be ROAR!"

Eh....

Me: "Is a Roar a monster?"
The Little: "No! No! No mon-ter. ROAR Mama! ROAR!"

And in the middle of our conversation? PBS was playing in the background. The Little ran over to the television and pointed to the screen. An alligator (or crocodile?) was crawling across the dark, damp floor of the Florida Everglades.

The Little: "See? See? See? See? See? Mama? Roar!"

And the light bulb turned on.

Me: "I see."

Later that week, I was repeating the story to my wonderful aunt who lives on the east coast. I mentioned I would be looking for a dinosaur or dragon outfit at the consignment shops for Halloween.

So imagine my surprise when I received a phone call sometime later in the wee, wee, wee early morning hours from my aunts (who are twins by the way - one made the gorgeous quilts I posted about last week.) They sheepishly informed me(due to the very early morning hour I suppose) that they were out shopping for patterns to make my son a "Roar" for Halloween and needed to know his size! I was so thrilled I didn't go back to sleep after that phone call. If you know me, you know that I have no clue how to work a sewing machine, let alone follow a pattern. My only hope for Halloween is to buy off the rack. I was so completely touched that my aunt would make him his very own special outfit.

When the package came we immediately pulled it out to take a look. It was a gorgeous dinosaur outfit - and The Little saw it and said promptly, "Mama! A Roar! A Roar! A ROAR!"

And he's been talking about it ever since. So here he is, in his gorgeous "Roar" outfit. Thank you to my wonderful aunts. The one who picked out the fabric and the one who stitched it into something gorgeous for my son to wear on Halloween.

In gratitude for family members who make holidays special,

Simple Mama.

  4. How adorable is he! And what a special little guy that his aunts would make such a wonderful costume like that. :) My son talks about "Roars" too, but he's generally referring to monsters.

  8. Just discovered your beautiful blog this evening (I think I found it through 54 Stitches). I love the story about your son trying to get you to understand what a "roar" is. Thank you so much for sharing all these little bits of your life with family. Such an inspiration.

  9. Oh my goodness, he is so adorable, and that costume is AWESOME.

As a side note, since you don't have his real name written anywhere I assigned him a name in my head based on what I thought he looked like. I was totally flabbergasted when I saw a picture of something of his and it had his name clearly written on the front - dude, that's the name I picked out for him! He totally looks like a Hisname. And he's very cute. And my son is very jealous of your son's hair. :)
