Beach Bumming Best Friends
My very best friend in the whole world came to visit this week. I hadn't seen her in over a year, and she's never had the opportunity to come visit us since we moved to the Pacific Northwest 4 years ago.
We met in high school and it was one of those relationships where you could just hear the instant "click" of connection. In many ways, we are very much alike. We have similar political and world ideologies. We're both pretty liberal. And wait for it.... that's where it ends. She's the Yin to my Yang. Where as I was always worried in high school about boys finding out that, *gasp* I liked them, or panicking that we would get in trouble with whomever I deemed to be the authority figure at that moment in time, she had no trouble talking to boys, or bucking authority.
She would call me out on my neuroticism and she made me laugh when I realized just how ridiculous I was while over analyzing the meaning of string or what "He" meant when "He" bumped into me in the cafeteria line and said, "Sorry." Without her, my life would have been dull. Because of her, I learned to let go a little bit and have some fun. I even eventually let my ELBOW touch the elbow of the boy that I liked without freaking out.
So we ditched the hubster this week and headed to the beach, 2 year old in tow for some much needed girl time. I was reminded just how much I love her. Reminded just how freaking funny she is. And reminded that no matter how much you love your husband, some things only a girlfriend understands in the way that you need her to. I put her on the plane this morning and I already miss her. Here's to lifelong girlfriends, weekend getaways, pedicures, totally inappropriate conversations, and laughing so hard you need to pack extra underwear.

I just found your blog through that silly post on Facebook! It did make me laugh and I am glad to see the blog too!
ReplyDeleteI am lucky enough to have two friends like this. One I met when I was 13 on a Star Wars chat room (kid you not!) and we have hung out in person 5 or so times over the years. The other one I met senior year of high school and it was as you say, an instant click. That friend only lives a few minutes away, thank goodness. Sometimes I think the only reason my hubby is still alive is because I can vent to my girlfriends! :)
